Subject: first O-50 game
Well, history was made tonight, with
Southbury hosting Falcon F.C.
(basically the New Britain B team) in the first ever official game of the
over-50 league (also known as the Old Farts division). Actually, "hosting" would
be the wrong word as the game was in fact played in Waterbury...you know
how hard it is to get a field in Southbury these days.
Tonight's Southbury team was made up of a few of
the O-40 league veterans (Afif, Kevin, Nelson, Ted, Peter, Milo), one of the
Prospect O-40 boys (Tony M.), our old friend Patrick, and some new old faces
(Tom C., Dave Mac, Fernando, and Art). One thing a sharp eye may notice here is
the absence of an out-and-out goalie (we're hoping Chris will join us later in
the season), but Afif did a great job as a stand-in between the posts: too
injured to play the field, he volunteered for goalie duty and made more than a
couple of fine saves (good enough to hold his place for next week, I'd
say).
Inevitably, with so many new faces, it was tough to
get into the groove early on as both sides struggled to come to the terms with
the (almost) grassless Bucks Hill Park playing surface. In a half that was
marked by very few shots on goal for either side, the highlight was probably
Patrick's vociferous running commentary on the game--I'd forgotten quite how
enjoyable it is to play with Patrick!
Even though there were no goals, there were some
encouraging signs for Southbury, with Dave Mac and Tony M. forming an instantly
effective partnership in midfield (even though Mac was supposed to be playing
stopper...a technicality at our age, I know).
The chances came thicker in the second half as the
veterans on both sides began to tire. It looked like Kevin was going to bag the
first goal when he got on the end of one of our more fluid passing movements,
but his final touch went agonizingly inches over the bar. Patrick, Ted, and
Fernando each had half chances, but then Falcon struck with about 10
minutes left in the game...the ever-dangerous number 17 crashing an unstoppable
blast past the previously impregnable Afif.
We pushed forward looking for the equalizer but
inevitably left ourselves exposed at the back--exposed enough for Falcon to nick
a second goal in the dying minutes for a somewhat flattering 2-0
victory.
So not the start we wanted, but I think we all
enjoyed ourselves...and once we get to know each other and get some of the
over-40 stalwarts back (Larry, Bill, Chris, Mike, Duda), I think we'll do just
fine with the old boys.
Night all
Peter
